24 May 2016 : Mercedes Benz has made a formal announcement regarding its plans to launch electric models of cars by the year 2020. The luxury carmaker is all set to launch four such models.
The proposed models will face competition from the soon to be launched electric cars by Audi and Tesla. The move is seen as a response to the announcement made by the German government to offer subsidy on electronic cars priced below Rs. 45 lakhs. In the beginning, Mercedes will be producing around 50000 electronic cars per year.
Thomas Weber, the Research and Development head of Mercedes that the four cars to be launched will consist of two SUV’s and two electric saloons. The SUV’s will be inspired from the GLC and GLA concept, while the saloons will be on the S Class and C class concepts. The cars will consist of new design languages and will be based on MEA platform. The cars will contain electric motors and will come with four wheel drive and rear wheel drive options.
The cars will be manufactured at the Sindelfingen, Rastatt and Bremen manufacturing plants of the company. Sources have revealed that the company is all set to make a huge investment of 4885 crore in the Hamburg plant. The car’s key components will be manufactured in this plant.
