9 May 2016 : In a shocking incident, the Punjab police, in a raid conducted across various jails in Punjab, recovered cash, mobile phones and narcotics.
The raids were conducted in several jails located in Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Faridkot, Patiala, Barnala and several other places.
A police source confirmed that cash, narcotics and SIM enabled mobile phones were recovered during the raid.
The largest catch was from Amritsar jail where the police seized 21 mobile phones. Foil paper used for smack consumption, 11 charging leads, 2 memory cards and 8 SIM cards. During the raid, around 30 tablets of intoxicants, bidis, 310 used syringes and Rs. 14340 in cash was also siezed. An FIR under the NDPS Act and Prisons Act has been filed in this regard.
From Gurdaspur jail, 6 mobile phones, 1 SIM card and 430 gms narcotic powder was recovered.
In all the other jail premises raided, the police recovered SIM cards, mobile phones and intoxicants. The involvement of police insiders in smuggling these items inside the jail premises is a possibility. The raids also revealed that all the jails were facing acute shortage of doctors and jail staff. The raids also brought into light the poor infrastructure at most of the jails.
According to a spokesperson, there was an immediate need to install CCTV camera in the jail premises, to check the smuggling of drugs and other items.
