20 May 2016 : Pinarayi Vijayan is all set to become the Chief Minister of Kerala as revealed by party sources. Vijayan, according to party sources will become the CM, heading the LDA or Left Democratic Alliance in Kerala.
In a meeting held at party headquarters at the Kerala capital, the decision was taken in the presence of top CPM leaders Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yechury. A formal announcement in this regard is awaited.
Vijayan was the preferred choice over the ex-Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan as he holds a majority in the state committee of the party and is younger than the outgoing CM by 20 years.
Vijayan has emerged as a grass root leader who works in tandem with party dynamics. The decision was turned in favour of Vijayan as the outgoing CM, who is revered as a mass leader is often tagged as being disruptive.
During Achuthanandan’s tenure as CM in the period between 2006-2011, the two leaders had a face off, much to the embarrassment of the party.
After repeated face offs, the party leadership suspended both of them from the political domain. While Pinaryani Vijayan was reinstated, Achuthanandan only received the status of a special invitee in the central committee.
